Chocolate Covered Bacon?!
Chocolate is my favorite food. Bacon is my second favorite food. Marini's, a candy institution in Santa Cruz, California, makes chocolate covered bacon. I've lived here in this little provincial backwater for several years already and I only discovered Marini's chocolate covered bacon last Friday when a coworker asked me if I liked bacon. Are you kidding me? Of course I like bacon-- shouldn't even be questioned. He told me that Marini's had chocolate covered bacon. Thinking of this in the abstract, I wondered why there were no riots stampeding towards Marini's for these suckas. I left work early just so I could walk across the street and buy a few strips.
Admittedly, chocolate covered bacon is a novelty candy-- like tequila lollipops with worm inside. It's probably just there at Marini's, targeted to touristy crowds who want proof that the town of Santa Cruz is pretty wacky. The candy is not really mindblowing. I was expecting my entire world to implode after eating bacon and chocolate together. Marini's milk chocolate is not my favorite, and the bacon they used was not really too tasty. If it had more salty-smoky bacony flavor, perhaps the bacon would be prominent enough to offset the sweetness of the Marini's milk chocolate. It also was devoid of the wonderful bacony crunch. In the end, I issue a standard "meh." I'll stick to the deep-fried Twinkies.

Ohhhh, I can't tell you how disappointed I am. :(
It sounded so promising...
Why not try the Mo's Bacon Bar from Vosges? I think it's a really well-executed example of a bacon-chocolate duet.
All I can say is that some people don't have much to do. I may be fifty years old, but at least I care more for my beautiful, hour-glass-shaped body than to eat something like this.
Sorry, but that's just the way I feel, and I have been food blogging for over 15 years.
LOL to the comment above, as if trying a piece of chocolate covered bacon is going to make you gain 50 lbs. and give you a coronary immediately after you swallow it. There's nothing wrong with living a little or trying something new now and then, especially if it's in moderation. Jeez, it's not like you said you ate a pound of these in one sitting.
I second trying the Mo's Bacon Bar! It's too bad the ones you got weren't so great =(
I care about my beautiful, hour-glass-shaped body too. Hahaha.
Anyway, the flavor reminded me a lot of taffy, without the gooeyness. I think if the milk chocolate would've been of better quality, it could've been great.
I'll have to look for the Vosges.

That is so disappointing. Perhaps this would have been a better taste experiment to take into your own hands?
I've been thinking of frying up some smoky bacon at home and drizzling the Lindt chili flavored chocolate on top for a while now but this is making me have second thoughts.
Bummer! I was hoping it would be so much better!
The Apothecary on Cooper St. in downtown Santa Cruz carries Vosges chocolate. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Wasabi bar.
Wow.
I still have to try this stuff, Even though my heart will probably explode on the spot.
